The Professor's Retinoscope is an invention he has developed to aid him in the health and medical welfare of his fellow Castaways, along with his Stethoscope, Hypodermic Needle and Dental Chair. It works by shining light into the patient's eye and observing the reflection (reflex) off the patient's retina. While moving the streak or spot of light across the pupil, the examiner observes the relative movement of the reflex. The Professor uses it to check Mary Ann for a concussion after she hits her head and thinks she's Ginger.
