It Had to Be You is a popular 1920s instrumental song that has been recorded several times by various artists and played in several motion pictures. It was composed by Isham Jones along with lyrics by Gus Kahn, getting published on May 9, 1924 by Jerome H. Remick & Co. of New York. The Isham Jones Orchestra recorded it on April 24, 1924 at Brunswick Studios in New York City. Released in July, it was the number-one record in the United States the following August, where it remained for five weeks, finishing as the Number 4 single for 1924.
Today, the song and melody has fallen into the public domain, allowing it to appear in several movies. It was performed by Ruth Etting in the 1936 film “Melody in May” and by Edward G. Robinson and Harry Seymour in the 1938 film, "A Slight Case of Murder." Over the years, it has appeared in several movies from the 40s and 50s, such as "The Roaring Twenties," "Casablanca," Mr. Skeffington," "Show Business," "The Incendiary Blonde" and by Ginger Rogers and Cornel Wilde in the 1947 film, "It Had to Be You." Gene Kelly and Marie McDonald danced to it in the 1947 film, "Living in a Big Way."
In recent years, it has appeared in "Annie Hall," "Crossing Delancey" and the the theme to the Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan 1989 film, "When Harry Met Sally."
In 1966, as the castaways were dealing with "war games" started by a gorilla, Ginger Grant posing as a USO girl sings the song in order to calm Gilligan after he is "wounded" by Mr. Howell's tie clip.
